St. Augustine famously said,

“Our hearts were made for you,
O God, they are restless until they rest in you.”

When he speaks of the “heart,” he is not just speaking about our feelings.  He is talking about the core of who we are. In our age as in his, our hearts can become restless.  There are so many things happening around and even to us.  The restlessness can take many forms. We are searching for something but find that it does not satisfy our deeper longings. We are looking for something that can not only withstand the change and upheaval but be a foundation that will sustain us like the deep floor of the ocean that still remains calm no matter what storm is raging on the surface of the sea.

St. Augustine in his conversion found a special place within in which the love of his God could satisfy his restless heart. When we receive the unconditional  love of God in an authentic experience, we can say, “I know that my redeemer lives.”  His life within we can help able us to face whatever storms that will inevitably come.

We undertake our spiritual journey in the hopes of discovering that place of rest in the arms of a loving God.

O God, give me an experience of that rest within that comes from your presence in my life.
