Impossible things keep happening when we rely on the inner strength of God working in us
and through us. When we have surrendered to God’s plan for us, when we have received this
inner strength to carry out God’s plan, things begin to fall in place. What seemed impossible
becomes probable because the circumstances over which we had no control, have changed.
We have witnessed this in the Catholic Church when the leadership has changed.
Pope Francis has called for a process of “synodality.” This is a process that opens the path for
everyone who is or was connected to the church, to have a voice through meetings at the
local parish level. The inner strength that comes from God can give way to new possibilities.
The church could begin to fulfill the vision of Vatican II when it defines the church as “the
People of God.” In any case, in this moment in history, we are called to receive the Spirit
which, like the wind blowing or like the dove that chooses to land where it will, allows us to
speak what is in our minds and hearts. The leaders are charged to listen to what we say and
from a listening church a future equipped to meet the challenges of our times, can be born.
Then impossible things can begin to happen through the inner strength and commitment of
the people.

• What does the church need to be or do to meet the challenges of these times?
