As Christians we have a story to tell. It is an ancient story which is in line with architypes
found in religions from around the world as well. It is the story that out of death new life can
come. We see it in nature. From the death of winter emerges new life with the coming of
spring.
Our story is told so well by the disciples on the way to Emmaus. How Jesus was found guilty
and had to undergo a horrible death on the cross; but they recognized him in a new way in
the breaking of the bread in the meal they had together.
What is our resurrection story? We have undergone two years with the pandemic. Many
people died and all of us have experienced our own kind of death to the things that were
taken for granted in the past. Christ’s resurrection, which we celebrate on Easter Sunday, can
bring us hope for new life. It requires faith. It requires a willingness to be open to receive the
sacrificial love that God wants to pour into our hearts. In other words, we need to lose
control of our tendency to want to figure it out in our minds. Only then can we be ready to
take part in the Easter mystery like the new catechumens’ experience when they emerge
from the baptismal waters as new men and women. Let us renew that experience for
ourselves and receive the miracle of new life that God wants for each of us.
