Do you have a large house? A house can give you a sense of security, respite from the cold and
heat of the weather, a feeling of all that is familiar and that all is well.
Jesus had no home, he relied on his disciples and friends for a place to rest as he tended to his
calling for the last three years of his life. He found his home in the love his father offered him.
He wants to offer us a home by dwelling within our hearts. Many have not found a home in a
church. Society offers less comfort in the breaking down of mutual respect and love, a house is
not enough. Many are longing for a place that offers something more. St. Augustine writes, “Our
hearts are restless until they rest in thee.” A Christian Church should be a place in which we find
Jesus!
What happens when Jesus becomes our home base? We are able to feel at peace and have
unexpected joy. He becomes our guide and when we put our trust in him, we can look for many
miracles large and small to occur. He sends us the gifts of the Holy Spirit to awaken within us a
way of living that changes the fear that is behind so much that is going on in our world to love.
This love can become a place which not only provides a home for us but offers the world a place
to dwell amidst all of the ambiguities of living in this age.
