We as humans carry the heavy burden of making judgements. Many times, we are
required to make judgements about our own behavior and the behavior of others. This
can take on a responsibility as we ascertain what is right and what is wrong in a particular
situation. Then there is a matter of grey areas when it is not so easy to say the particular
conduct is completely right or wrong.
Jesus gives us a way out. He says, “Don’t judge and you will not be judged” and “God
rains on the just and unjust alike.” If we have been able to develop a contemplative heart,
maybe we are more likely to see the goodness in all of God’s creation including ourselves.
He gives us the example of the good shepherd who is willing to leave the ninety-nine in
order to rescue the sheep that has gone astray. Jesus and the Church is calling us to
welcome all, even those on the margins. If we are honest with ourselves, we can say,
“There but for the grace of God, go I.”
We all have received the gift of life from God. We are all brothers and sisters to one
another.

  • Is judging others easy or difficult for you?
  • Is it easy or difficult to show mercy to others?
  • Are you able to forgive others as God has forgiven you?

  • O God, give me a merciful heart
