Pope Francis has designated this Jubilee Year 2025 with the theme: “Pilgrims of Hope.” Maybe we should consider the difference between “hope” and “optimism.”

“Hope,” as we think of it here, is one of the theological virtues along with faith and charity.  That means it is more about God than it is about future events.  Hope presumes a relationship with God that relies on the trust that God will be with us through the good times as well as the challenging times even when all might seem lost.  As St. Julian is often quoted as saying, “All will be well.” This kind of trust leads to a peaceful heart as we put things into God’s hands.

“Optimism,” while not being unimportant, means “always looking at the bright side of life.” Even with all that it going on in the world today, our Holy Cross Associates still has the motto: “We are people with hope and zeal to bring.” because of our trust in the providence of God.  This trust will not only let us survive but will help us thrive.

This year as we travel with the Church as pilgrims of hope, let us lead the way with the experience of theological hope as we express it in our words and deeds with our fellow brothers and sisters.

  • Are you usually an optimistic person?
  • What gives you hope as you meet the challenges of life?
  • Is the motto, “We are people with hope and zeal to bring” something you want to be a part of your spirituality.

O God, help us to trust in your providence for our lives.
