When we consider the mystery that we are the sons and daughters of God, we can look to Mary who was named the “Mother of God” by one of the early church counsels. She embodies the mystery that humanity and divinity can coexist in our human nature. She totally belongs to God and yet totally to the earth as a human in birthing Christ. Let us pray to her as we contemplate her life in God as well as her being “Mother of the Church” when we live our earthly life of contemplation and service.

In our age we also need to look to Mary to see how sorrow and joy can be a part of our lives. We cannot be blind to all of the suffering going on in this age. But with it we can also experience joy knowing that God has loved us and with faith and trust know that God will guide us on the pathway to glory. Mary experiences both sorrow and joy as both virgin and mother. She invites us to totally surrender to God and yet with her bring Christ into our place and time.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Pray for us now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
