Consider that this would be the last day of your life. What would you want to do? Would
you want to connect with people you love or those who would miss you? Would you
want to seek forgiveness, or would you want to express forgiveness to others in your life?
Would you like to experience the beauty of small things that you have taken for granted?
Would you want to ask God for the trust to have Jesus, Mary, or Joseph to be close to you
as you make your transition? Would you spend time to say “good bye” to all of the things
that were important to you?
The purpose of these questions is to appreciate the life that you are experiencing now. It
could give way to waking up to a new day. You may once again want to thank God for all
of the blessings and the experiencing of new life. This is similar to what new Christians
might experience at Baptism coming up from sinking into the water and the rising to new
life in Christ. This is the experience Christ had in the passion with his suffering and death
leading to his resurrection. What an awakening that must have been for the first
Christians as they came to a faith and trust in God that would lead some even to their
martyrdom.

  • What does the exercise of the last day experience bring to mind in you?
  • Would small things in everyday life take on more importance?
  • Do you have enough trust in God to put your life into God’s hands?

  • O God, help me to appreciate the life you have given me.
