As we perceive the world we live in, as it comes to us from the media, we might conclude
that life on our planet is in crisis. Wars, the climate, polarization become part of our
experience on a daily basis. Yet we have much to help us become grateful. Life is still
worth living with its many ups and downs.
Can we consistently have a grateful heart? Does it depend mainly on the circumstances
we face, or is there a deeper source within us that leads not only to gratefulness but to
joy? Our faith brings a deep trust in God as the answer. God loves us and promises to be
with us in all of the circumstances that we face. St. Paul, with all of the hardships he had
to endure, reminds us that “nothing can separate us from the love of Christ.” We can
choose to “rejoice and be glad.” In our life we have the opportunity to learn and grow in
appreciating God’s love, even in our mistakes and sins.
What a wonderful practice we could begin if we took a moment to name the good things
that have blessed us throughout our day. “Gratefulness is next to gracefulness,” Brother
David Steindl-Rast has said. Even Christ’s death on the cross led to resurrection.

  • Do you have the capacity to choose joy?
  • Even in troubling circumstances have you experienced God’s love and joy?

  • O God, help me choose Christian joy as I give witness to your love.
