Something new is about to happen. As Jesus lies dead in the grave on Holy Saturday, Mary Magdalene is experiencing the dark night. The Lord had prompted her to wash his feet with extravagant perfume. He who had created the meaning of her life is now dead. Her life now seems meaningless as she goes to the tomb to tend to the body. The Church symbolizes this by removing everything from the altar. Outside the tomb she meets a gardener whom she does not recognize. Something new happens. When he pronounces her name, “Mary,” She knows it is the Lord. He is alive! Her life once again is in her Lord’s hands.

What about us? As we celebrated the Easter Vigil, we waited for something new to happen. Probably something has been already experienced in the lives of the catechumens. They were plunged into the waters of death in their Baptism only to rise to new life as Christians, followers of Christ. We too can become open to a new life filled with Easter grace giving us courage to meet the challenges that we face. We are called to continue our journey of spiritual growth with new hope in reaching our destination.

Christ has truly risen in us!

  • Are you able to experience death to resurrection of Jesus in your own life?
  • What is the new life to which you are being called?
  • Are you asking God to give you the grace to meet the challenges of these times?

O God, help us celebrate this time with lots of joy!
