Our earth is ancient. Civilization is old too. To study history is to be in touch with
the struggle to become what Jesus called God’s kingdom. “Thy kingdom come on
earth as it is in heaven.” But we also are aware of the many setbacks in achieving
this end in history and in the society, communities, families in which we live and
also in ourselves. At times we experience our powerlessness in accomplishing
what Jesus is calling us to in his most enduring prayer. We experience our
powerlessness and the realization that there are many forces at work that go far
beyond our capacity to achieve what we know is right and good.
It is in the experience of this powerlessness that God opens within us a new
possibility. In is only by letting go that God can lead us to an inner encounter with
God’s presence. God opens the door to a new way of living and a new way of
proceeding in our powerlessness. St. Paul’s says, “It is in my weakness that I am
strong.” The light of Christ within us will guide us and the Holy Spirit will give us
the power to accomplish God’s will in us. Our lives will become a place in the
tapestry that will mark God’s overall purpose here on earth as it is in heaven.

  • Have you experienced your powerlessness lately? What form does it take?
  • How could you bring this “powerlessness” to your prayer?
  • How could this experience lead you to a new way of having God become
    more active in your life?

  • God, may my powerlessness lead me within to an encounter with your presence
