Why is it that some find it difficult to not only believe but also to feel God’s unconditional
love? It could be that in their childhood the little child, which still exists within them, never
really felt unconditional love from at least one of their parents. As a result, they will search
for that kind of love for all of their lives. Most of the time they will be disappointed. Human
love always seems to come with conditions. If we act in a certain way, then people might be
willing to love us. By trying to please people, our behavior may result in conditional
acceptance.
Our society idolizes winners. Many times, these winners are “put on a pedestal.” But often a
fatal flaw is discovered, and the accolades can be replaced by rejection and even scorn.
But do we not believe that as Christians that God has created us and even knows “the
number of hairs on our head?” God in Jesus says from the cross, “Father, forgive them for
they do not know what they are doing.” When we finally realize that God’s love for us does
not depend on our behavior, we can experience a breakthrough in the way the prodigal son
received his father’s love. We begin by caring for the little hurt child that exists within us.
Then we will be more open to receiving God’s unconditional love.
