When we look at the men Jesus chose to be his apostles, we discover men with definite flaws. Some were ambitious, impetuous, had sordid pasts, unable to grasp Jesus’ mission. Yet Jesus loved them and was willing to entrust with them his efforts to bring about the kingdom of God.
Many have the tendency to want to hide their weaknesses from God and others. They want to show only their dedication and spirituality. Do we ever ask God to see all of who we are with all of our foibles, hypocritical tendencies, and even our sins? We need to realize that God accepts us and loves us just as we are. He understands that we are human and imperfect, and God in Jesus loves us anyway.
St. Paul tells us that if he is to boast, he will boast about his weakness. When we acknowledge our weakness, it is then that we are strong. The marvelous thing is that God can then take our gifts and weaknesses and through the Spirit’s grace use us for great things.
- Do you bring your whole self to God when you pray?
- Have you experienced God’s love even when you are less than what you want to be?
- Can you say to God, see me just as I am?
O God, help me entrust my whole self to you.
