In this noisy and pressured world silence can be golden. It is not easy to come by. Our minds are high wired to receive the latest news, the latest styles, the latest conflicts from around the world, the latest natural disasters etc. We o this information at our fingertips from a number of devices at our disposal. Even when there is a time when things are quiet, it is very difficult for us to stop worrying about what will be coming next. Yet is very worthwhile for us to take the time to treasure moments of silence when silence becomes something beautiful.
Its like the parable that I have told many times. The student goes to his master asking, “How can grow in my spiritual life?” The masters tells the student to fetch a basin and pitcher of water. When the student returns with both, the master tells the student to pour the water into the basin and let it over flow over on the floor. The teacher asks the student, “What does this experience tell you about growing spiritually? Only when the basin is empty is there for something new.”
When we are silent, God has the opportunity to break through the obstacles and enter our lives.
- Would you say you are “addicted” to some form of mass media”
- Do you provide for moments of silence for God to enter your life?
- What are some of your experiences when God “spoke” to you during these times?
O God, help me fine moments of silence for you to enter my life.
