We would like to think that we have friendships that would last all of our lives. But in reality,
that does not often happen in the everchanging circumstances of our lives. There are
changes in locations, changes because of death, and changes in many other unplanned things
that keep friendships from flourishing.
And yet there is one companion that could remain with us forever. There is a God who
searches us out, a “Hound of Heaven”, and He wants to find us and be present to us all the
days of our lives. We only have to let God’s initiative take hold and find a place in our hearts.
As the song says, “I am with you always, I’m with you come rain or come shine.” This can be
the stability that is steadfast through all of the changes, the confusions, and even through the
doubts of the “dark night of the soul” that the mystics have often experienced, and whatever
else life can foist upon us.
So, what is our response? Do we provide an opportunity for God to break through our busy
lives and nurture that Christ within us? His friendship is key to recognizing God in all of God’s
creation, so that whatever life offers us, we will know that God is with us through it all.

• Who are your friends?

• Have these friendships grown or waned through the years?

• How would you describe your relationship with God (Christ)?

O God, help me to deepen a friendship with you that will last all of my days.
