We know that breathing and our awareness of breathing in and out are important in helping us stay in the present moment. Our breath is a sign of the life God has given us and God’s gift in enabling us to stay alive. The word for breath in Hebrew is the same word for spirit. Our breath is the means by which we can realize that God’s spirit is always with us.
Christians are especially open to God’s spirit because Jesus has promised to send his spirit in a special way at Pentecost. It was this Holy Spirit that enabled the Apostles to bring this new life out into the world. They also received those wonder gifts of peace, joy, kindness, goodness, gentleness, truthfulness, patience, and self-control. With it came a love of brothers and sisters that was the hallmark of Jesus’ teaching. The Holy Spirit breathes in us bringing God’s love, which enables us to access all of the gifts we need to create a new community that can truly be called Christian.
- Do you often become aware of your breathing?
- Do you connect your breath with the Holy Spirit’s action within you?
- Are you open to receive all of the gifts the Holy Spirit wants to give you?
Come Holy Spirit, fill us with the love that can transform our lives.
