From day to day our lives can fall into a routine. One day blends into the next as the weeks, months and even years go by. Sometimes we wonder if God is doing anything new in us. Then all of a sudden as we climb step by step, we find ourselves on top of the mountain. There we experience the beauty of a grand view. God is transfigured before our eyes through God’s creation. We can say with Peter as he experienced the transfiguration of Christ, “Lord, it is good for us to be here.” We want to savor this moment, and we do not want to leave. God gives us these experiences to be remembered when life seems so matter of fact and predictable. It is in these times that we can recall the awesomeness and joy we felt on the mountain top. We can make them present to us in the here and now. We are able to allow those same feelings to surface and add a bit of luster to life.

Jesus experienced the extremes from Mount Tabor when his Father’s light shown through him to the darkness of the cross when he felt abandoned by God. In our lives, sometime we will experience both sides of life. Remember Christ’s promise to his disciples, “You will experience a hundredfold in this life and the next, and you will also experience the cross.” Each day Christ’s life can live in us.

  • Do you sometimes feel yourself enveloped by life’s routine?
  • What helps you realize that each day has something special to offer you?
  • Do you take time to savor the mountain top experiences that life offers you?

O God, thank you for the times when I can really feel your presence.
