One of the most effective ways of praying when we are faced with situations which are
beyond our control is to pray with the word “HELP”. This becomes a prayer to God that
admits we are not in control and that we are putting our complete trust in God. This can be
beyond rational thought. What comes to mind is the image of Peter walking on water. The
result of this prayer is to feel relief because we have put ourselves in God’s hands. God will
take away our burden and allow our racing mind to stop so that we can come to inner peace.
What is the best way to help others come to an inner peace? It is not something that can be
taught; it is something that can be caught. The peace within you will reach out to the other.
It might be in a gesture such as a hug or the way you are looking at your friend. I remember I
received a long hug from a family member allowing me to cry at the sudden death of my
mother. It was so powerful that I will never forget the healing effect it had on me.
We can lend a hand in many ways. We only have to look at the corporal and spiritual works
of mercy. But it is only through prayer that God will lead us in the most appropriate way
given our gifts, circumstances, and the urgency of the need.
• How do you respond to a situation in which you feel you have little or no control?
• Does your prayer help you at these times?
• Does your prayer life motivate you in extending a helping hand to others?
