Many people try to figure out who God is. They want to put God on their examining table
to dissect God in the same way they would be dissecting a frog. I do not think it works
that way. The “book of Job” in the Bible agrees. Theology is faith seeking understanding.
Maybe there is another way. Instead of trying to figure out who God is, maybe we should
be open to having God find us. Maybe God is knocking at our door. What we need to do
is to be willing to hear God’s knocking and having enough faith and trust to open the door
and let God in. In order for this to happen we need to give up our need for control as if
God were an object that we can fully understand. This requires a letting go knowing that
what we will discover is a God of love and not a tyrant. We know this because of the love
we have received, even though imperfect, points the way.
The Bible statement that “God is love” is born out by countless number of witnesses in
tradition that were even willing to give their lives as validation. Pray that God gives you
the faith and trust that hearing the knock at your door, you will open it and have the
experience of receiving God’s presence with God’s tremendous love for you.
• Do you try to figure out why God let’s certain things happen?
• What other source helps you to discover the God in your life?
• What experiences have you had when you have put your faith and trust in God?
O God, help me open the door to your countless love.
