Most of the time our mind wonders over things that have happened in the past or
challenges that are coming up in our future. When we get the news each day, we are
often burdened by the violence that has occurred yesterday as we become aware of
humanities’ inhumanity to fellow humans. We are made very aware of the great
challenges we face. On a personal level, we also are all too aware of our failings in
meeting the goals we have set for ourselves.
I think Jesus might be saying to us, “lighten up.” My “kingdom” cannot be achieved in a
day. Our God is a patient God. Our God is a merciful God. What our God is giving us is
one breath at a time. Our breathing in and out is a gift of the present moment. Those
who have a terminal illness know what a precious gift this is. In every breath we can come
to appreciate more the gift of life. This realization can bring joy. Joy is contagious. Then
we can share our appreciation and joy with a very troubled world. Christian joy can lead
to action, and our actions, though seemingly small, in this age of instant communication
have the power to influence our world. God’s gifts to us today will lead the way.
- Is it hard for you to live in the present moment?
- Does your prayer life help you to value the gift of life?
- How is God present to you in the here and now?
God, help me experience you in this present moment.
