When we think of an entrance into contemplation, we think of Mary, Jesus’ mother. She must have had a tremendous openness for receiving God’s presence in her life. That trust was most evident when she accepted the Holy Spirit’s design for bringing Jesus into our world. Her life would be filled with many joys and sorrows. Simeon prophesied that a sword would pierce her heart. In the end all would be well as she was lifted up in her assumption into heaven. There can be a lot of sadness in our life. As we grow closer to God working in us and through us, we become more intensely aware of the suffering that is taking place around the world including within ourselves, our families, our communities.
How can we participate in relieving such pain and suffering? Like Mary we must not lose heart. We need to keep the faith in good times and in bad times. But what could be most helpful is to have hope. As Christians we believe in Christ’s resurrection. We know how the story will end. Like Mary, we will be lifted up by Christ and experience our own assumption into God’s glory.
- What part does Mary play in your spiritual life?
- Does Mary’s trust in God become a model for you?
- How has God lifted you up to become a light in a dark world?
O God, help me develop a trust in you the way Mary lived her life.
