Pope Leo’s pontificate has been devoted to two main areas: unity and peace. These important gifts of the Spirit are very much needed in these times. There are many divisions in families, communities, church, and world. People have made choices and taken a stand on many issues. They are not readily interested in finding common ground. Where do we find a way forward?

As we celebrate the feast of Pentecost, we might look to the Holy Spirit for guidance. Do not the fruits of the Holy Spirit include peace, patience, and courage? We need the Holy Spirit to give us the insight to transcend our physical, emotional, and psychological differences and bring unity by enabling us to share in God’s divine life. Let us recognize that it is God’s spirit that is working through us and can bring reconciliation. It is in using our gifts and talents and recognizing the gifts and talents of others that something new and rewarding can emerge. It is the Church under the leadership of Pope Leo that can lead the way. Unity and peace are not beyond what the Spirit can enact in those who put their trust and faith in God.

  • Do you recognize the Holy Spirit in your prayer life?
  • Do you call on the Holy Spirit for guidance in your decision making?
  • Are unity and peace a priority for you?

Come, Holy Spirit. Bring unity and peace into our lives and in the world
